Bellaire Trolley Run & Flying Owls 5k report !!!

First, I will admit that my perception of 5k's used to be wrong. I used to think that there is not enough kick in 5k's and they are perhaps little easy to run. I stay corrected now. 5k's can be truly challenging races if you run them HARD.

My first 5k was in early December last year with a time of 20:44. I signed up for Bellaire Trolley Run because many runners told me how fast this course is and that I must run this race. I signed up for Flying Owls 5k because this race was held at Rice University and being a Rice student I HAD to run it. Only $5 entry fee for Rice students was another incentive.

I went into Bellaire Trolley Run with a target of running a sub 20 race. It meant running about 6:27 per mile. I thought I could do it if everything went according to the plan. I was in for many surprises. First surprise was my split for 1st mile at 6:10. Second surprise came in the form of utter helplessness in my breathing and heart rate half way into the race. I ended up slowing down during second mile with a split of 6:40. Third surprise came when I felt better in last 1.1 mile with a split of 6:47. In total 19:37 for 5k earning me second place in my age group.

Flying Owls 5k had too many turns but I had walked the course million times and I had pretty good idea of distance on the course. I PR'ed with a time of 19:17 and here are my splits:

1st mile: 6:05
2nd mile: 6:25
last 1.1 mile: 6:47

Finally, there are some pictures from Flying Owls 5k, :-)
