A little running history !!!

I will be honest. I have secretly fantasized about qualifying for Boston marathon and running the Boston experience. For those who are not familiar with Boston marathon, it is the Mecca of running. In order to run Boston marathon one needs to qualify first in another marathon. For a guy under 35 years of age, one needs to have finished a marathon under 3:10:59.

I will take a little detour here and talk about my running experiences. In my childhood, I was very active kid with very high energy level. I grew up in India and many games children used to play in 80-90 era involved running around either in playground or in street near your home. I find it very sad that these days in cities, kids prefer to play indoors or spend time on computer games. Playing with other kids in street was the best part of growing up in India.

I never took part in any racing competition till my college year. Our college was one of the better engineering colleges of India and the focus was always on studies. Every year we used to have a sports meet in which different disciplines (Chemical, Mechanical, Computers, Electrical etc.) used to compete against each other. I used to run three days in an year during that sports meet. Chemical Engineering didn't have enough runners so by default I used to run 100, 200, 400, 1500 meters. Looking back, I think 400 meters was my best distance. I am still donkey proud of the Gold I won for Chemical during my senior year.

Fast forward and nothing comes to mind about running except running 5-6 times in those many years. Then, I accidently met Bayou City Road Runners (BCRR). With BCRR, I started out running + walking during Bayou runs (6.5 miles). In, BCRR I found some of the best friends I have had in Houston. Now, BCRR is my family away from home. I really cherish some of the friendships and camaraderie in BCRR.

This post is becoming longer than I had thought so I will finish my banter about current running/running goals in next post.
